Gush Etzion (block of the tree) is a large settlement (around 50,000 residents) between Bethlehem and Hebron. Originally settled in 1927, this settlement was abandoned in 1937 during the 1936-1939 Arab revolt. Though there were attempts to revive it, it remained under Jordanian control from 1949 until 1967 when the 6-day War brought the West bank region of Palestine once again under Israeli control. Gush Etzion is one of the settlement blocs that should have been evacuated under the Oslo Accords.
