October 2007: "Wired: 20 Years in Photojournalism" by Aladin Abdel Naby
This exhibit brought together Abdel Naby's work over the last ten years at Reuters News Agency in Egypt. The color photos reflected different aspects of daily life, hard news and soft features, each with its own special memory and emotional experience.
November 2007: “River Man” by John Feeney
The Sony Gallery for Photography in association with the New Zealand Embassy presented this collection of photographs taken by John Feeney. Feeney lived for 40 years in Cairo and was known as a photographer, film producer, writer, gourmet cook and storyteller. His photographs depicted Egypt’s epic grandeur such as the historic pictures of Gamel Abdel Nasser’s funeral cortege leaving Qasr al-Nil Bridge, as well as aspects of the country rarely dealt with. This exhibition was opened by the New Zealand Prime Minister Rt Hon Helen Clark, during her visit to Egypt to open the new New Zealand Embassy.
February 2008: “The Shape of Light” by Reem Al Faisal
The thirty-five black and white photographs of this show explore the light of nature and the light of the heart. Through her photographs, Al Faisal seeks to show signs of the Divine, “For me, my photography is a way to praise God’s glory in the universe.”
March 2008: “Ara Güler: The Classic Photographs”
Not only is Ara Güler the master of Turkish photojournalism, but also, as a foremost figure in international creative photography, he carries a special place in the history of world photography. Güler’s work was exhibited, in Egypt for the first time, at the Sony Gallery for Photography. The 48 black and white photographs on display were glimpses of old Istanbul, each reflecting a different meaning and a life story. Printed in the darkroom, unspotted, and natural, they are like the pages of an old book opened to new eyes.
May 2008: “Egypt: Metamorphoses” by Dale Osborn and Kamil Vodera
On May 4, 2008, The Sony Gallery for Photography in association with The Czech Institute of Egyptology and The Embassy of The Czech Republic presented this exhibit in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Institute. The exhibition was inaugurated by H.E. Mr. Petr Gandalovič, Minister of Agriculture of the Czech Republic and H.E. Mr. Miloslav Stašek, Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Egypt. The show, which comprised of two sets of black and white photographs by these two photographers, reflect images of Egypt in the last forty years. These photos are a patient testament to the metamorphosis of Egypt as a country.
