Stair Climbing Wheel Chair

Supervisor(s):

Dr. Alaa El Butch

Team Members:

Doaa Gawish
Heba El Shimi
George Albert
Khaled Nounou
Maya El Sayed

General Objectives:

The project aims at coming up with a feasible design to aid disabled people using wheel chairs.

Objective 490:
Different designs were discussed, researched, and analyzed. The feasibility of each design was evaluated and the "Step Climber Wheel Chair" (spider design) was chosen. force analysis was calculated and theoretical and small scale models were made.

Objective 491:
A new design was chosen and analyzed which is the "Stair Climbing Wheelchair Carrier". Steps of manufacturing and procedures followed to complete the manufacturing plan were discussed.
Achievements:
The project concluded that the easiest and best solution is to mount a separable mechanism on the wheelchair. A prototype was produced by the team but as mentioned in the report this prototype did not address all the problems that should be considered in the design.

Student Evaluation

1- How did you come up with the idea of the thesis?

We brain stormed ideas, but the main emphasis was brainstorming ideas that benefits Society, or the less fortunate people.

2- What difficulties did you face?

Difficulties by the department: as after starting the thesis with Dr. Arafa, the department disapproved because he was a part timer.

Difficulties by the professors: sometimes we got contradicting answers from different professors to the same questions. The problem of trying to verify the information was very difficult at first, yet we were able to over come that by thesis II.

Difficulties from team members: there were problems related to decision-making, communication, time management, and reluctance to work. However these problems were solved quickly as the team members were always behaving professionally.

3- Suggest any improvements or feasible recommendations?

Making a meeting or maybe an assigned class, with several professors attending and the group discussing their project, because sometimes more than a single professor's point of view is needed to help the project succeed.

The grading system should be made on clearer basis, and the students should be aware of it before their presentations.
