It Takes a Village: A Regional Faculty Training on Community-Based Learning
The Ma’an Alliance is hosting its second regional training for faculty. This training will focus on the teaching pedagogy of community-based learning. Participants will have a chance to learn about different community-based organizations, hear faculty experiences across the disciplines, brainstorm new course ideas to address community needs, and learn how to generate an interest amongst students for community-based learning courses.

Amani Elshimi
Director of Community-Based Learning
The Gerhart Center for Philanthropy & Civic Engagement, American University in Cairo
Amani Elshimi is Program Director of Community-Based Learning and Senior Lecturer, Department of Rhetoric and Composition at the American University in Cairo. She has been an active practitioner of engaging pedagogies, including community-based learning, undergraduate research, experiential games and project-based problem solving. She has 16 years of experience in higher education teaching, faculty training, materials development, curriculum design, testing and program administration.
Mirvat Bulbul
Vice President for External Affairs
Birzeit University
Mirvat Bulbul has been a full time faculty member in the Department of Civil Engineering at Birzeit University (BZU) since 1999.
In addition to her teaching position, she held the position of Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs from 2005-2009. She is currently the Director of External Relations at BZU.
Bulbul received her bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from Imperial college of Science and Technology in 1987. She completed her master’s degree and PhD in Civil Engineering at the University of Cambridge in 1998. Her field of specialization is structural engineering.
Cindy Saleh
Research Assistant
Center for Civic Engagement and Community Service, American University of Beirut
Cindy Saleh is the Research Assistant for the Center for Civic Engagement and Community Service (CCECS) at the American University of Beirut. She holds a certificate in Arabic from the Strategic Language Initiative program at the California State University, San Bernardino; a BA in History and a MA in Middle Eastern History, both from the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. As an active researcher, she aims to conduct several oral histories in the region and has written and contributed to various publications around the world.
