As a response to the delayed construction of the new campus housing facilities for relocated faculty, AUC is now proposing off campus accommodation in El Rehab City, one of New Cairo’s new communities. “We wanted to give faculty an option to move closer to the new campus,” said Sherif Maged, assistant director, housing.
El Rehab (pronounced Re-HÂb), a new and residential suburb of New Cairo, is situated at a 10-minute ride from the new campus. An AUC regular shuttle bus will be provided to ensure transportation to and from the new campus for the AUC residents.
The housing office has secured 20 housing units in El Rehab. “We plan to raise that availability depending on increased demand,” explained Maged. So far, 19 faculty members have requested this new option and will be moving into their El Rehab apartments at the end of the spring semester.
Trips have been organized for faculty members to tour El Rehab and visit the various 2-3 bedroom units. “This is the best way to show them where El Rehab is located, what amenities are available in the city, and what the housing facilities look like,” explained Louise St-Laurent, faculty services coordinator, in charge of coordinating the visits with the housing office.
The El Rehab units will become permanent additional facilities for AUC’s faculty housing.
The new campus faculty residence is not scheduled for completion before the academic year 2009-2010.
