Medical provisions for the new campus put in place

As part of its medical emergency provisions for the new campus, AUC already has an agreement with two of Cairo 's leading hospitals and is currently consulting with two more.

For the past year, Dr. Ikram Seif El Nasr, Head of Medical Services Department has been conferring with AUC's senior administration to determine the needs for the clinic and emergency facilities for the New Cairo campus. "We want to provide facilities that will meet the needs of the AUC community," said Dr. Ikram.

AUC established an agreement with the International Medical Center, located on Ismailia Road. This medical facility is a joint venture between the Egyptian and US Army, staffed with American and Egyptian doctors and nurses. It has well equipped emergency rooms and intensive care units. It has 742 beds and a vast range of specialized patient care in cardiology, neurology, surgery, pediatrics, cancer treatment, renal dialysis, as well as outpatient services. It is also outfitted with CAT scanners and magnetic resonance imagery systems, state-of-the-art monitors, a gamma knife and two helipads.

The second hospital to service the new AUC campus will be the El Salam International Hospital in Maadi. AUC is exploring the possibility of extending these medical provisions to include the newly opened El Ahly Bank Hospital in New Cairo, as well as the Air Force Hospital, still under construction.

At the new AUC campus, the clinic will be centrally located in the Campus Center, by Bartlett Plaza. The clinic will be staffed with five doctors and five nurses, and outfitted with three recovery rooms, a blood-testing lab, and a pharmacy.  Negotiations are underway to ensure a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week service with a doctor on-site for emergencies after regular clinic hours.

To transport patients to the clinic for lesser injuries, golf carts will be used within the pedestrian area of campus; however, in case of emergency, patients will be transported to the closest possible hospital. "We will have our very own, well equipped ambulance," said Dr. Ikram, which will include a life support system, an oxygen unit, cardiac monitors in case of heart attack, and a spinal immobilization and transport device.

Emergency equipment will be available at the new campus clinic for handling different emergency cases such as hypertension and heart condition. Emergency kits including oxygen cylinders, as well as wheelchairs and stretchers, will be dispatched across the campus premises. Furthermore, all medical staff at the new campus will undergo a comprehensive training this summer in one of Cairo's emergency rooms.

The current AUC clinic located on Youssef El Guindy Street will continue to service the downtown campus community, on a smaller scale.
