Move to new campus underway – final schedule announced

With the construction of the new campus now in its final stages, the timeline for the move has been finalized. The new schedule, which was shared with all AUC “Move Captains” earlier this week, reflects the most recent factors relating to the move – including the logistics, construction completion, and the summer session.

Underway now is the move of the Main Library and laboratories of the Science and Engineering building. The transfer of the Main Library to the new campus was divided into two stages - the compact shelving and the open shelving. The compact shelves have been installed and books began being moved in early June. This stage was successful and was completed ahead of schedule. The second stage, the supply and installation of the open shelves is currently underway.

Over the coming weeks, crews are putting the finishing touches on the computer laboratories and the administrative and academic offices, and those offices will begin to be operational the last week in July. View the updated move plan here.

The new schedule reflects the very detailed coordination required for the move. In accordance with government housing laws, indoor spaces and offices on the new campus can only be occupied once regulations have been met, which can take some time. These include testing of the fire alarm and fire fighting systems after being fully installed, the inspection of emergency exits, etc. Completing the final testing of this equipment and obtaining the necessary occupancy permits has required additional time.

Other factors influencing the revised schedule were ensuring that all offices had IT access and avoiding disrupting faculty and staff involved in the summer session. “Some staff and faculty have to stay in their offices until the end of the summer session,” explained Engineer Mohamed Abdel Gawad, AUC’s senior advisor who is overseeing this very challenging move. The revised schedule will ensure that the telephone and Internet connections will be up and running when people occupy their new work space in August.
