The sports complex at the new campus is expected to be near completion in September and open to the AUC community by October 1.
The sports facilities will be open from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm, Sunday through Thursday, and from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. The pool will operate on a more limited schedule and is initially planned to be open weekdays from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on weekdays; on Fridays and Saturdays, the hours will be 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
AUC students will have access to the on-campus sports facilities, through the payment of their student activities fee. While faculty and staff will have access to portions of the facilities at no charge in the fall, the center will charge a nominal fee for all faculty and staff beginning in January.
Because the facilities will be used for university-sponsored sporting events, not all the indoor and outdoor facilities will be open and accessible at all times. In addition, other areas of the sports facilities will have extended hours. For example, it is expected that the basketball courts as well as the outdoor tennis, volleyball and handball courts, will be open at least until midnight.
In comparison to the capacity of the downtown campus, the athletic facilities on the new campus have been dramatically expanded. The indoor spaces include the ARTOC Central Athletic Court, a 1396-square-meter multi-purpose court that can accommodate up to 2000 spectators. The football and track stadium, with its 2,000 seats, constitutes only one feature of the elaborate 18,200-square-meter outdoor sports complex.
“We plan to offer up to 30 on- and off-campus sports and, hopefully, developing one of the best sports programs in Egypt and the region,” said AUC’s director of athletics and assistant dean, Chuck Gordon. “In addition to the university-sponsored sporting events, we also look forward to welcoming faculty and staff to the facilities in the coming months.”
