Editorial Style Guide
The American University in Cairo’s Editorial Style Guide serves as a tool to ensure that the university’s wide array of publications and Web content maintain a consistent editorial image. AUC’s editorial style relies on American English usage and is drawn primarily from The Associated Press Stylebook. In some entries where there are differences, AUC’s guide supersedes other sources, which have been adapted for a university setting. Additional secondary sources for AUC’s guide include The Chicago Manual of Style and The Elements of Style.
For spelling of words not listed in the guide, always use the first listed
spelling in The American Heritage Dictionary. The guide also includes five
appendices that provide a listing of campus buildings, offices and
departments;
a guide to punctuation; nondiscriminatory language; computer and Internet terms; the spellings of areas in Egypt and Cairo; and awards at AUC.
AUC’s style guide is a living document that will adapt and expand in the
future to meet the changing needs of the AUC community and modifications
to standard usage.
The Office of Communications and Marketing, which produces the guide, welcomes all comments, questions and suggestions.
