J

jargon

  • Jargon is the special vocabulary and terminologies used by a certain class or occupational group. Avoid jargon.
  • When the use of jargon is suitable in a specific context, provide explanations of words that would be unfamiliar to readers.

 Jr., Sr.

  • Always capitalize and use periods.
  • Use the abbreviations Jr. and Sr. only with people’s full names, and do not precede with a comma: Paul Smith Jr.
  • On second reference, it is important to distinguish between father and son: elder Smith and younger Smith.
  • The notation II and 2nd are not always the equivalent of junior –– they are used also by a grandson or nephew.
