W

Washington, D.C.

  • Write as Washington, D.C. (with a comma after Washington) or District of Columbia when referring to the U.S. capital.
  • Use state of Washington or Washington state to refer to the state.
  • Do not abbreviate Washington as Wash.  

Web site

  • Two words.
  • When writing Web sites, remove http://: AUC’s Web site is www.aucegypt.edu.
  • See appendix 4, computer terms.

 West, west

  • See directions.

 withdraw (v.), withdrawal (n.)

  • Withdraw is used as a verb: He will withdraw his application.
  • Withdrawal is used as a noun: The dean accepted his withdrawal form.

 WF

  • Withdrawal with a failing grade. Capitalize and do not put in quotation marks.

work study

  • A program that allows students to work part time while continuing their studies. Student employment is preferred.

 world-class

  • World-class is an adjective. Hyphenate in all cases.
