year abroad (n.), year-abroad (adj.) (YAB)
- Follow the examples:
- She came to Egypt for a year abroad (n.).
- She is enrolled in AUC’s year-abroad program. Being a year-abroad student is a wonderful experience (adj).
- Year abroad may be abbreviated to YAB on second reference.
- When referring to a year-abroad student who has spent a year or semester at AUC, write the name followed by YAB in parentheses and the year spent at AUC: Christina Andrews (YAB ’85).
years, academic
- Incorrect: 1998/99, 1998/1999, 98-99, 98/99.
- Correct: 1998 – 99 academic year.
years, alumni
- See class, graduates.
years, plural (1990s)
- See decades.
years, series
- In running text, write the words the reader should be reading (from, to, between, and). She worked there from 1998 to 2002.
- In headlines and lists, use all four digits followed by an en dash, with a space on both sides: 1998 – 2002.
- Use only two digits if the century remains the same: 1994 – 98.
