Emerging Democratic Practices in Rural Egypt |

| This is a one-year research project to be carried out in collaboration between the Social Research Center of the American University in Cairo and the Department of Anthropology, University of Copenhagen. The project investigates changes in political and social practices in rural Egypt with a focus on aspects of democratic practice and good governance in a number of selected social institutions. The project specifically examines the extent to which the emerging "rights culture" has impacted on, or interacted with traditional social and cultural institutions at the local level in rural Egypt. |

| The main goal of this study is to further the development District Provider Organizations' capacity to effectively and efficiently manage contractual arrangements for the Basic Benefit Package as well as other types of financing and payment reforms.
Objectives:
1. Assess the impact of the provider incentive scheme on the quality of care (including patient responsiveness) and health facility performance with focus on reproductive health services.
2. Examine the satisfaction of DPO officials and health care providers with the incentive payment scheme and the capacity of the DPO to effectively manage the scheme. |

Investment Climate Assessment (ICA 2006) |

| The aim of the ICA is to support the Ministry of Investment in designing its priority reforms to improve the investment climate. The ICA needs to be strongly policy oriented, providing quantitative measurements of the nature of challenges and hence allowing reform recommendations.
The ICA includes a quantitative assessment of the Egyptian investment climate using a firm-level survey. The assessment covers a sample of about 1500 firms of 10 employees or more representing the main regions of Egypt; Urban Governorates, Lower Egypt and Upper Egypt.
Objective of ICA 2006 is to study the impact of the economic reform policies in improving the investment climate and to investigate the nature of challenges in services sector |

The activity is a collaborative work between the Social Research Center and the UN-Habitat Monitoring System Branch (MSB) and under auspices of the National Population Council.
This study investigates the wide disparities in health and livelihood status between the slum and non-slum parts of Cairo and to provide sufficient and comprehensive small area statistics that can facilitate local budgeting and policy planning. Overall the goal of this program is to be addressed on international, national and local levels. Apart from the SRC activity, UN-Habitat is including a random sample of large cities of at least 100,000 populations from developing countries regions in this study. |

The focus is both on the strategies pursued by social actors in seeking change in gendered power relations and on the confluence of factors that create enabling conditions for such changes |

| UNIFEM: Under the auspices of the Ministry of Investment a second phase of an Investment Climate Assessment of Egypt for 300 firms was conducted. The aim of this survey was to provide the Ministry of Investment and relevant policy makers with needed information to formulate policies for enhancing the abilities of Egyptian workers and increasing the national and foreign direct investment.
UNDP: SRC prepared a comprehensive study on the necessary skills for women required by the labor market from the perspective of the firm. |
