October 16, 2005Kraetzschmar comes to inspire local youth
To the average 20-year-old, t-shirt-wearing student, he looks like a study-abroad student dressed in blue jeans and red t-shirt, holding his paper cup of l’Aroma coffee. Students taking his classes are often surprised to find that he is the one standing in front of the class, instead of joining them.

October 16, 2005Letter to the Editor
I was offended by your cartoon published in the Oct. 9 issue (“Our ethical pattern.... in a nutshell”). Reducing student - indeed human - relationships to a mere physical attraction that is solely determined by the female dress code is an insult to both women and men. This is such a lame cliché: the male is the helpless (and blameless) creature, seduced by the female ...

October 16, 2005Fight me...
Picture of Shareen It is not every day we are taught a lesson. However, it seems like every day we are tested to see if we’ve truly learned what we were taught. The lesson that I’ve learned lately is that of appreciation, and I owe my thanks to Ramadan (and no, I don’t mean my appreciation of food).

October 16, 2005You can’t wear Ramadan
Picture of Yasmeen Every Ramadan, we split the students at AUC into two groups: Group A, the ones who are ‘religious’ and walk around trying to spread the spirit of holiness, and group B, those who act as if Ramadan is like any other month of the year. 8th DAY OF RAMADAN - 5:39 P.M.
Making Iftar
Farida Mohammad, 67, who has lived on a couch under a makeshift roof outside the Library and SS gates for 25 years, shares iftar with Karim Mahmoud, a parking attendant in the area, on Tuesday. Using a small butane burner, she prepares a meal of chicken, rice, and vegetables with whatever money she has that day. Behind her, from right, sits her friend Sabah Mustafa, 16, and sister Souad Mohammed, 50. (Joshua Adland / THE CARAVAN)
ASLEEP ON THE STREET
Beggar on street
The midday sun scorches the sidewalk where this young beggar sleeps, between the Greek Campus’s Library gate and Cilantro on Mohamed Mahmoud Street. His tattered shirt and dirty bare feet are obvious signs of the ever-present destitution on the streets between AUC’s campuses. (Hoda Hegazy / THE CARAVAN)
