The Student Judicial Board (SJB) winners for 2005-2006 are Donia El Sadat, Ahmed Maged, Mohamed El Taweel, Ahmed Hisham and Mina Nageeb. Mohamed El Taweel was elected the chair of the board.

The Faculty Senate scrapped its constitution in favor of bylaws last Wednesday and approved the creation of a new faculty committee responsible for looking at ways to raise faculty salaries. Exchanging the senate constitution for bylaws will facilitate the senate’s amendment process, according to David Wilmsen, the senate secretary.

There is a surprising shortage of applicants for the Electronics Engineering (EENG) major for the spring 2006 semester. This comes after the School of Sciences and Engineering made a decision to raise the number of students it would accept in the major to 50 per year.

Among cheers, jeers and much sweat, the first-time soccer tournament organized by the Anti-Cancer Team (ACT) successfully ended last Tuesday with the winning team taking home six mobile phones provided by Sony-Ericsson, one of the official sponsors.

AUC recently showcased the banned movie Five Pound Note, which focused on the controversial topic of sexual frustration, but many AUC students and professors say they are still uncomfortable discussing sex. Some students do not understand why professors shy away from talking about sex, especially when they are teaching courses that include topics related to it.

On Dec. 7 the Caravan will hold its semi-annual election for editor-in-chief. Currently, only one person has expressed interest in running for the position, despite a flyering campaign to attract more students from the AUC community.

December 4, 2005“Would you care to die silently? Please ... ”
In the Arabic story (Nov. 13) on Kofi Annan’s speech at AUC, the Secretary General of the UN said the actions of those who chose armed resistance in Iraq cannot be justified with its deliberate targeting of people that are not directly connected to the occupation. Violence should not be met with counter violence, and that it should be replaced by tolerance and mutual respect, he said.

The other day I witnessed a shocking scene outside the Greek campus. Just yards away from a parked shuttle bus shifting the rich to the dorms, a little boy, not more than 10 years old, was fouling openly on the pavement. It was not the fouling itself that proved most shocking, but rather the way he was going about it - crouched down like an animal.

STUDENTS VOTE IN JUDICIAL BOARD ELECTION
Student voting
AUCians selected five Student Judicial Board (SJB) members last Thursday for the 2006-2007 academic year. Ten candidates were running in the three-day elections that started Nov. 29, although candidate Mohamed Safwat withdrew. The Office of Student Development gave candidates a general knowledge exam and only those who passed were eligible to run. For the first time, candidates were also required to sit for a second exam on the AUC constitution to select the SJB chair according to the highest score. (Shereen El-Gazzar/ THE CARAVAN)
