AUC political science professor Mona Makram Ebeid was one of the less than 50 women candidates in the Egyptian parliamentary elections that began Nov. 9. She lost in the first round. The number of women winners in Egypt’s 2005 parliamentary elections dropped to five compared to the 11 seats they held in the previous parliament.

After Hassan, a dear friend and the other candidate for editor in chief, and I were called in for the results, I felt both overwhelmed and relieved. AL BUSTAN FIRE
Students studying
On Monday, Dec. 5, a fire erupted in Al Bustan garage off of Hoda Sha’arawi Street. A car was burnt, leading to much worry among AUC students, many of whom park their cars there daily. The car’s owner felt heat rising from the car as he turned the ignition and immediately got out of the vehicle as flames engulfed the car. Al Bustan workers helped put out the fire and told the Caravan that it was an accident. (Nazly Abou Seif/THE CARAVAN)
