Ramadan in Egypt

Ramadan in Egypt has its own essence and culture.  These pictures
depict what the holy month is like in Egypt and covering all aspects
of Ramadan.

Al-Hussein   Al-Hussein   Coffee Shop
An alley in Khan el Khalily, a souvenir and local bazaar area.   The illuminated shops that sell fawanees, Ramadan lanterns, in Khan el Khalily.   After having a large meal for iftar, people head over to the local coffee shops such as Al Feeshawy located in Khan el khalily to have shisha, otherwise known as hooka.

Fanoos   Mosque Entrance   Hotel @ Hussein
The fawanees that are lit up during the holy month of Ramadan.   Just as the call to prayer commences, Muslims leave the remaining food on their plates in Al Hussein and head over to the Al Hussein mosque to pray.

 

 

The small alley where the popular Al Feeshawy coffee shop is located.  This was one of Naguib Mahfouz's favorite places to come.

Mosque @ Al-Hussein   Drinks    

The overcrowded Al Hussein area from afar.

 

  Many people make the Ramadan drinks and give them away as a way of doing a
good deed by allowing people in the street that haven't made it home, yet to break their
fast with their drink.
