AUC student wins LE 10,000 in local design competition

Journalism and mass communication (JRMC) senior Dina Abdel Hafez won first place in the local design competition “Wrap to the Max,” organized by Kemet Corporation. Art student Amanie Hashim came in fifth place.

“ I was more than happy, I was thrilled. I started jumping up and down, and also shaking and shivering,” said Abdel Hafez, who received a cash prize of LE 10,000, while Hashim received a certificate.
Seven students from the JRMC 315 course Principles of Advertising, participated in the competition.
Students from different universities in Egypt were asked to design a vehicle “wrap,” or a design that gets printed on special vinyl wrap, laminated and then ‘wrapped’ on a vehicle, according to the competition flyer.
Participants were given written explanations of the theme they had to base their design on. The first brief was called “Desexp,” and related to desert safaris, sand skiing and hiking. Brief two, “Party,” required participants to design a cover related to a special occasion. “Petmarch,” the third brief, required participants to design a cover related to animals and pets. In the fourth brief, “Hot Dots,” participants were asked to design a cover related to a print shop.
Kemet Corporation, which specializes in architectural, civil, mechanical and electrical engineering software, contacted JRMC professor Sherine Fahmy about the competition, which she told her classes about.
“I think it is a great opportunity for students to try practical work in the IMC [Integrated Marketing Communication] field,” said Fahmy, adding that the competition gave students a chance to show their strength and experience the real world. “It was also an excellent opportunity for challenging other universities in the same field,” added Fahmy.
Participants submitted their designs on Thursday, Nov. 8. A panel of judges examined the designs and the best three were applied on Volkswagen cars.
The cars were displayed in front of Modern Sciences and Art University (MSA) in Sixth of October City and in Misr International University (MIU) on the Cairo-Ismalia highway for people to vote for the best design from Nov. 11 until Nov. 14. People could also vote online at;

“We don’t look at the university‘s name at all when choosing the winners. What we look at is the design and how it corresponds to the brief chosen by the participants,” said Hesham El Rashidy, production manager at Kemet.
AUC students who participated in the competition enjoyed the time they spent designing the cover. “ I joined this competition because I like art, so I am really interested in designing, but the problem I had is not being able to use Photoshop [a professional image and graphics software],” said Christine Adel, JRMC junior.
Other participants in the competition also faced some difficulties. “Everything was hard in the competition. I didn’t take 305 before and so I wasn’t really exposed to Photoshop; I sent one design [first] and ended up doing [and sending] another one because my design wasn’t right,” said Alsharifa Salma Al Hassan, JRMC junior.
“You cannot get technical with it [the design], you had to keep in mind that the students who are voting don’t know everything, especially people outside AUC. I couldn’t get really professional with it because I was afraid that people voting would not understand my design,” said Abdel Hafez.
