ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY: The Economic Society aims to increase student
awarness about the Egyptian economy. |
Egypt’s minister of investment, Mahmoud Mohieldin,
will speak at The American University in Cairo (AUC)’s first Economic
Society forum, “Investment and Privitization in Egypt: Prospects
and Challenges,” on Monday, Oct. 25 in Oriental Hall.
The idea is to simplify and approach in a friendly manner a controversial
issue concerning the wave of privatization that has begun since Nazif’s
government was appointed, explained Maged Fakhr, an economics senior and
member in the Economics Society.
Recently, several public companies, including as Banque du Caire and Omar
Effendi, the department store chain, have been placed on bids to be sold
to private and foreign investors.
In addition to Mohieldin, the student-moderated forum, which will begin
at 5 pm, will feature prominent AUC economics faculty members like Galal
Amin and Adel Beshay, said Farida Mortada, president of the Economics
Society and an economics junior.
“As a club, we are trying to be objective in our forum, as we are
hosting speakers who are pro-privatization and others who are against
it, because contradictions make the point clearer, ” said Fakhr,
noting that professor Galal Amin is one of the major opponents of globalization
and professor Adel Bishay is pro-privatization.
A documentary will be shown at the beginning of the forum on globalization
in Egypt, including facts, figures and different views of students, specialists
and labor workers. The keynote speakers will comment on it. “The
documentary aims to make economics more interesting,[because] it is viewed
as a boring subject,” said Mortada, noting that the forum will not
be a lecture but will include discussions between the speakers and the
audience.
“ We are trying to fill in the gap between practical and theoretical
knowledge of a profound and essential field that could be regarded as
the essence of the contemporary world of business,” said Fakhr.
Because of security concerns for the minister of investment, students
and faculty members can participate in the forum only with invitations,
which will be available at the Oriental Hall entrance before the event.
