The second juried student exhibition organized by the performing and visual arts department is currently showcasing 90 pieces of art by 50 different student artists in the New Falaki Gallery at the American University in Cairo (AUC).
A ceremony was held on April 7 to present awards to 11 of the students participating in the exhibition. The exhibition will run until April 17.
“I like the diversity of the art and I like the fact that so many beginning students won awards, which should encourage everyone to keep on painting,” said Ann Lesch, dean of the school of humanities and social sciences (HUSS).
Students wishing to participate were only allowed to submit three pieces of their artwork. The 90 pieces, selected from 166 submitted, were chosen by Omar Al Fayomi, a Nubian artist, and Huda Lufti, artist and associate professor in the department of Arab and Islamic civilizations at AUC, said Brian Curling, assistant professor of art and director of the art gallery.
“It’s always successful when we can showcase the best work done here and show that there is quality in the work,” said Curling.
The 11 award winners were selected by Al Fayoumi and Lutfi, along with Lesch; the chairman of the PVA, Stancil Campbell and two other professors.
“What I’m very proud of is that students
submitted their work even if they weren’t picked because this is the most successful part of the exhibition—that there is a desire to participate in the art program’s activities,” said Curling.
“I’m happy that my work is recognized. It’s nice when someone other than you appreciates or connects with your work,” said Heba Nawara, an art senior and winner of the Dean’s Award.
As visitors walked through the gallery’s works, the award-winning students shared their feelings about the exhibit with the Caravan.
“Nature always inspired me to look beyond its existence. I’m honored that my piece attracted others,” said Farida Dorra, an art senior and winner of the Professor’s Choice Award.
“I’m very happy that I won, I feel like…someone appreciated my work. I didn’t think I would win,” said Suzan Kenawi, a mass communication junior and winner of the Juror’s Choice Award.
Curling noted in the awards ceremony that “it’s not about prizes, it’s about the desire to get an idea into art.” It’s another way to celebrate quality and work, he added.
“The pieces shown at the exhibition this year are quite diverse. I think it’s more interesting than last year’s,” said Hind El Ramly, an AUC alumna.
Some parents also attended the ceremony to encourage and support their children.
“I am happy of course because I know that my daughter Suzan loves art and painting and this is motivation for her,” said Elva Guaderrama, Kenawi’s mother.
