The Voice

Cheers got louder with every stomp that hit the ground when students from the Palestinian booth performed the traditional Dabka on International Day. The crowd applauded and rooted for the passionate national dance more than for any other performed that day.
It was a beautiful scene, but compared to Al Quds club’s attempts to get students involved with the Israeli blockade on Gaza through a sit-in, it becomes a rather sad scene.
When members of Al Quds club tried to increase awareness about the humanitarian situation in Gaza through talks, banners and flyers, no one was listening. In fact, most students had a rather negative attitude about the plat being occupied by students with a cause when all they wanted was to go about their day normally. But when you add music and dancing, you get their attention.
The Americans were so inspired by the dance that they set up a donation box for Al Quds club in the United States booth.
As the booths closed and the flags were taken down, you could still see students walking around with the Palestinian scarf around their shoulders or wearing a t-shirt with the slogan “Sympathize with Gaza” printed on it.
If only we could see that kind of support everyday, even without all the dancing.

I am writing to say that I find the recent Caravan article, “Actuarial science: an abandoned major?”, to be misrepresentative of the major and the faculty who make this subject possible. The comments made in that article focus on a narrow set of negative occurrences, without providing a complete portrayal of what the major is and why we are lucky to have it at AUC.

I am writing regarding the 13 April Letter to the Editor by Greg Collins.

I understand the inclusion of letters that bring to people’s attention issues directly related to the university, but I question whether it is justified to include ideological rants without at least printing an alternative viewpoint as well.  Continue Reading
