The Voice
Every year during the Student Union (SU) presidential elections at the American University in Cairo (AUC), we, the Caravan, are fully immersed in keeping up-to-date with the elections amid the chaos of fighting, swearing and downright dirty politics.
This year, however, the SU kept its word: there were only a few pushy campaigners in sight and no visible fighting. Sadly, due to the absence of said things, many students were probably unaware that the elections were actually going on. While this did make our job of reporting on the elections a lot less grueling, it also gave us a different perspective on the SU presidential elections, namely that, without the fist-fights and anarchy, there really is nothing much to it.
We are not suggesting that the two presidential candidates throw punches to make our front page more interesting but we are suggesting that they take their role as chief representative of the entire student body a little more seriously.
It was shocking and extremely disappointing to learn that one candidate’s winning plan was to establish a supermarket on the new campus and that the other candidate, while possessing the rare will to change things, had no concrete plans for doing so.
We, as students of a world-recognized university, would sleep a lot better at night knowing that we are being represented by worthy members of the student body and not simplyby any student who passes the Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement to run for SU president.
What has the SU done for us, the students, lately but organize parties and invite celebrities over for a chat? What about the more substantial issues that affect the student body?
We, the Caravan, would like to think that there is more to AUC students than event-planning and grocery shopping.

Dear Student Union...that wasn’t appropriate!

I’m not going to lie. What happened was quite frustrating. Someone needs to speak up and tell the rest of us that we’re doing something wrong.
Let me start from the beginning.
The American University in Cairo’s Student Union was invited to a conference called For a Better Egypt, hosted by the French University, where student leaders from several universities in Egypt met to discuss some of the serious problems in Egypt and worked on finding practical solutions for them.

Unveiling the “innocence” of the Israelis
Greg Collins’ views ( April 13 issue) seem to me to be the same views of most Western people. To tell you the truth, I too am no fan of Hamas and condemn their attacks on innocent unarmed Israeli citizens. At large, I condemn attacks on any unarmed civilian regardless of nationality, race or religion. I also condemn and question the following:

Collin’s views “simplistic”
It saddens me to see how many people like Greg Collins come to the Middle-East with such a simplistic view of the conflict. According to Greg, Hamas is the root cause of all the violence in this conflict and the only solution is for Palestinians to simply lay down their weapons and give up their right to resist the occupation. As a Palestinian, I strongly condemn the murder of unarmed civilians. While sticking to that belief, I do not see how the murder of Palestinian civilians by the Israeli Defense Forces constitutes legitimate self-defense.
