Foreigners pull off sa’eedy accents in ‘The Key of Life’
Have you ever had a conversation with a non-native speaker in Arabic? Maybe. But have you ever heard a non-native speak Arabic with a southern, sa’eedy accent?
All that and more could be heard on the soccer court of the American University in Cairo’s (AUC) Zamalek dorms, which was recently turned into a rehearsal hall where international students practiced their roles in the first play to be performed in colloquial Arabic.

After a long trip to Italy, the 14 members of the American University in Cairo (AUC) choir took the stage of Palermo University charged with excitement. They left with their heads held high after winning first place in the music contest, carrying plaques engraved with Italy’s monuments.

Not many students at the American University in Cairo (AUC) use public transportation to travel to or from campus, including the underground metro. AUC student Tamer Abdel Aziz is one of the few AUCians who utilizes the metro each day and along the way he connects with Egypt’s other classes in a way he feels many other AUC students do not.
