Land, Trade and Power: a History of Economic Relations in the Middle East, 600-1800 A.D.

Offered in alternate years.
The course will explore the major economic structures in the Middle East prior to the modern period.  It will consider land, a major resource, structures for its management and the competition to control it.  It will also examine trading organization, commercial structures and legal structures within which such activities were pursued.  The role of merchant communities and merchant families, their place in society and their relations to the power structure will also be explored.
