Marriage and the Family in the Medieval and Early Modern Middle East

Offered in alternate years.
This course will define perspectives and approaches to the understanding of marriage, the family, the household and private life in the Middle East.  These will be studied in relation to larger issues, such as Islamic law, as well as changing societies, political and economic structures.  The course will examine the way these are interlinked to family structure, sexual segregation, definitions of private and public.  Students will be exposed to various types of sources: travellers' accounts, legal works, architecture, deeds of pious foundations, and court records.
