Prerequisites: ECLT 103 and 6 hours of social science coursework. Offered occasionally. Introduction to the social arena within which politics occurs and the political arena which helps to shape society in Africa today. Examines the impact of colonialism, African responses, nationalism, decolonization, independence, and contemporary Africa. Central themes include group identities and relations between societally based and state based authority structures, and the changing dynamics of state-society relations. The course topic is inherently interdisciplinary and students should be prepared to explore Africa through primary and secondary sources. No prior knowledge of Africa is expected. |
