Development Implications of Demographic Change: Global Population Aging 1993-1994

This study was part of a larger study of the development implications of demographic change focusing on population ageing in eight developing countries over two years. The study aimed to identify the specific developmental implications of population aging, assessing the contribution of the elderly to development and suggesting policy option to enhance these contributions . Using the common protocol and the questionnaire developed by UNOV a survey of 800 households was conducted with individuals 60 years and above .
Eight sites were chosen from rural and urban areas. For the rural areas Shanawan and Kafr Shanawan villages were chosen in the Delta region while El Belida and Menshiet Kaseb were chosen in Upper Egypt. For the urban sites Shebin El Kom city in Menoufia governorate, Al Ayat city in Giza governorate and a Sheiyaka in Cairo ( Abbassia ) were chosen. Also a few questionnaires were conducted in Zamalek, Abden and Sayeda Zeinab urban areas in Cairo.
