The goal is not only to encourage more women to do scientific research and design new technologies, but also to shift science and technology to being more women -centered
 
To enable women to play a more active role in redefining the direction of research and policy-making
 
The UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development (UNCSTD) raised gender issues with government ministries dealing with science and technology
 
UNIFEM is working in partnership with NGOs on projects to improve women’s access to, and mastery of new technologies, ranging from electronic sharing of information to initiatives for e-commerce and ICT policy
 
Innovative public access sites are being set up through "Tele-Centers" located in community centers, public schools, libraries and women’s centers, where people can obtain and share information through technologies such as computers, Internet, e-mail, faxes and telephones as well as through linkages between these technologies and more traditional media with broader
outreach, such as community radio
 
  Tele-Centers are also becoming an important tool for education, technology-based community learning centers to support literacy work in developing countries
 
Mobile telephones may hold out more promise for the future as they become capable of transmitting e-mail and other forms of information
