Classical Electrodynamics

Prerequisites: PHYS 316, PHYS 505. Offered in spring.
Boundary value problems in electrostatics: Poisson and Laplace equations; Formal solution of electrostatic boundary value problem with Green function; applications in rectangular, spherical and cylindrical coordinates. Multipoles, Electrostatics of macroscopic media, dielectrics and Magnetostatics. Time-varying fields, Maxwell equations, Conservation laws for macroscopic media. Magnetohydrodynamics and Plasma Physics. Relativistic formulation of electrodynamics. Lagrangian and Hamiltonian of a relativistic charged particle in external EM fields. Radiation by moving charges and radiation scattering. Lagrangian for the EM field. Invariant Green functions.
