The workshop objectives are addressed in five main blocks of lectures. The following provides a brief summary of the main contents of these blocks:

1- Reproductive Health Paradigm: Overview and Evolution

This block focuses on introducing the participants to the reproductive health paradigm. The lectures present the participants with the information on the historical background and the evolution of the reproductive health concept and the rationale that underlies the existence of the reproductive health agenda in the population arena. The meaning, the essence and the different perspectives that the reproductive health encompasses and their implication for population policies are also addressed

2- Understanding Reproductive Health Dimensions: Needs and Concerns

This block addresses the basic needs in reproductive health. It emphasizes the main dimensions in reproductive health such as reproductive choices, maternal mortality, and maternal morbidity. It also exposes some of the neglected aspects of reproductive health such as the social dimension, women’s perceptions, and women’s mental health and psychological wellbeing. These dimensions undergo yearly revision to allow for the recognition of new issues and concerns.

3- Concepts, Measurement, and Practical Experiences

In this block, the participants are introduced to the main themes and theoretical underpinnings of reproductive health dimensions. The lectures also address the availability of data and indicators. Participants are encouraged to synthesize materials about their own countries and to suggest needed studies to generate adequate information relevant to their settings.

4- Policy Approaches for Reproductive Health

This block of lectures discusses health policies and their implications for reproductive health and health sector reform. It assesses health sector reform, its historical background, rationale, and dimensions. It also addresses the reform agenda that involves better targeting of public health intervention for cost effectiveness, assuring financial access to affordable personal services and improved efficiency in the service delivery system. It also introduces the participants to the study of ill health and its practical application such as Global Burden of Disease (GBD) approach.

5- Implications of Reproductive Health for Research and Service Delivery

This block focuses on implications of the reproductive health agenda in the area of research and service delivery. It provides the participants with practical experiences of prominent and junior researchers who have carried out research studies in reproductive health. It discusses the difficulties encountered in implementing reproductive health policies. It addresses implications of reproductive health agenda in areas such as family planning, abortion, primary health care as well as new areas such as normal delivery. Issues regarding implications of the implementation of the reproductive health agenda on research are also discussed.
