398

Between Hindu and Muslim in India and Pakistan

Same as HIST 398.
This course will examine some of the important dimensions of the long history of Hindu-Muslim relations and interactions in India. We will concentrate on religious ideas and practices, while often examining how religion has influenced politics, and vise-versa. The premises of the course is that to understand the Hindu-Muslim conflicts of the past half-century, we need to look at past events and practices that have become part of the cultural memory of communalism, or that demonstrate mutual interchange and fluid boundaries of identity.
