With the increasing demand on learning Arabic it is important for universities to be able to offer Arabic language courses within the limitations of their budgets. Considering the Arabic Language Institute's renowned fame in the field of AFL (Arabic Foreign Language) teaching & learning and the increasing demand on its programs as highlighted by the ALI self-study presented in 2007, it is only natural for the Institute to extend its services to reach students in their homeland and at their universities without having to turn down hundreds of applications every year due to the limited schedule and space capacity. Hence this project initiative offers to design, develop and teach an online, interactive, video-based course intended for use by university students and independent learners on the Web.
Beginning Arabic is an interactive, introductory, online course of Modern Standard Arabic. The course targets adult learners who are non-native speakers of Arabic and offers them the equivalent of 5 contact hours of instruction per week in addition of 3 hours of homework daily. The course aims at developing the fundamentals of Modern Standard Arabic through speaking, listening, reading, writing, and oral drill within the framework of the essentials of syntax, morphology and a working vocabulary.
