An Exhibition on Upper Egypt
|
An exhibition on contemporary social and cultural life in Upper Egypt, at the
Moesgård Museum, in Aarhus Denmark, opened in April 2003 and will last for one
year. The exhibition consists of artifacts, photographs, short videos and a
slide display; visual material was collated by Nasseif Azmy. The exhibition was
funded by ENRECA, the Moesgård Museum and other Danish organizations. It was the
brainchild of researchers involved in the SRC project entitled “Rural
transformation in Upper Egypt”, a collaboration with the Center for Development
Research (Copenhagen) and the Department of Ethnography and Social Anthropology
at Aarhus University. The opening ceremony was attended by the Egyptian
Ambassador to Denmark, Her Excellency Samira Ekdawi and Grethe Rostbøl, former
Minister of Culture, chairman of the Danish Center for Culture and Development.
His Royal Highness Prince Henrik of Denmark visited the exhibition. A
beautifully illustrated book, Upper Egypt: Life along the Nile was produced to
accompany the exhibition, and a special edition of the journal Jordens Folk was
devoted to the exhibition.

Pan-African Programme on
Land and Resource Rights
|
SRC researchers are part of a program linking advocacy groups, researchers and
practitioners concerned about land and resource issues in Africa. The program
aims to develop and articulate a pan-African voice on land and resource rights,
policies and advocacy, and engage with other stakeholders at regional and
international research and policy-making events. The main activities are a
series of workshops in each of its four areas: West Africa, East Africa, North
Africa and Southern Africa. The first workshop was held at SRC in March 2002.
The second, in Lagos in July 2002, prepared the Lagos Declaration on Land and
Resource Rights which was presented at the World Summit on Sustainable
Development, held in September 2002 in Johannesburg.
Funding: Ford Foundation; 10/01-9/02.

Resource Sites
|
The SRC
has recently developed
four on-line resource
sites. Both enable the
user to navigate through
updated information in
order to aggregate data,
create subsets and
perform a wide range of
analytical techniques.
The information
presented is designed to
assist in policy making
and agenda setting.

Under the sponsorship of
the United Nations
Development Fund for
Women (UNIFEM), we have
developed this site in
order to study the
impact of the
macroeconomic policies
on women with a special
focus on Egyptian women.
The site tries to assess
how macroeconomic
policies such as
national budgets,
economic reform
policies, liberalization
and structural
adjustment programs
affect women’s lives.

site also provides
access to background
materials, research

policy briefs,
information on relevant

This site thus
facilitates the exchange
of information and ideas
among various interested
parties - researchers,
policy makers and
practitioners – and
provides them with the
tools needed to analyze,

Geographic Information
System (GIS)
|
For the first time at SRC, a Geographic Information System (GIS) is being used
to present
information visually, in map form. As part of the SRC research project to
monitor efforts to
eradicate female illiteracy, researchers are preparing a series of maps showing
data at the
governorate, district (markaz) and village level in the study area, Fayoum
Governorate. These maps are designed to assist decision makers in planning and
executing strategies to eradicate female illiteracy, especially in developing
and using criteria to prioritize areas for interventions. ARCMAP software is
being used |
